Warmouth
Lepomis gulosus
Common Name(s):

Mudbass, goggle-eye perch
Description:

The mouth is large on the warmouth, with the upper jaw extending to or beyond the middle of the eye. The coloration is dark olive-brown and irregular bars appear on the sides of the fish. Warmouth have only three anal fin spines, which distinguish it from the rock bass that have six.

Feeding Habits:

The warmouth feed on aquatic nymphs, small minnows, crayfish, and shrimp. They will also take advantage of insect hatches when the opportunity arises.

Range:

Warmouth are found in the Great Lakes and Mississippi river basins from Pennsylvania to Minnesota and south to the Gulf of Mexico. It has been introduced into much of the western half of the United States as well.
Habitat:

Warmouth prefer weedy lakes, sluggish streams, marshes and ponds. They are a secretive fish seeking cover in rocky banks, stumps, or weed masses to avoid direct sunlight.
Typical Size:

Adult warmouth are generally 4 to 10 inches in length and will average about a pound in size. The warmouth will generally live an average of 4 to 6 years.
